Gerund:
My neighbors, thinking that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season and watching it on television, never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of year.

Appositive
My neighbors think that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season because they watch it on television, they never go outside, and take advantage of the outdoor activities that are available at that time of year.

Infinitive
To think that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season, my neighbors must watch it on television; they never go outside to take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

Sara: Gerund--good; Appositive--your use of "because" makes this difficult; Infinitive--sorry:-(
Andra: Gerund and Appositive--good; Infinitive--almost there.
Pat et Marie: Gerund--almost there; Appositive--you've really used a relative pronoun; Infinitive--a good solution:-)

I'm happy the gerund was correct. Let me try to fix the appositive and the infinitive error in my last post:

Appositive
My neighbors think the best thing about winter is the hockey season and watch it on television, they never go outside, and take advantage of the outdoor activities that are available at that time of year.

Infinitive:
To watch the hockey season on television, my neighbors think it is the best thing about winter, they never go outside to take advantage of activities available to them at that time of year.

3. To go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities in the winter it is not the best thing to my neighbours: hockey season and watching it on television is.

Sara: The appositive is still awkward--you have two contradictory statements in there. With the infinitive you're on the right track--check the grammar;-)
Andra: You have the same problems as Sara with the infinitive;-)

2. My neighbours, Bob and Jill, think that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season and watch it on television; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

3. My neighbours think that the best thing about winter is it's hockey season and that they can watch it on television; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

To go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities in the winter is not the best thing to my neighbours:watching hockey season on television is.

Sara: Appositive is much better--now check punctuation;-)The infinitive is still very awkward.
Nadia: The gerund is good; when you use the appositive you don't add another item--you subtract something that is duplicated; I don't see any infinitive in #3.
Andra: A good solution:-)

2. My neighbours, who never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities, think that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season and watch it on television.

3. My neighbours are crazy to think that the best thing about winter is it's hockey season and that they can watch it on television; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

Appositive
My neighbors think the best thing about winter is the hockey season, and watch it on television, they never go outside to take advantage of the outdoor activities that are available at that time of year.

Infinitive:
To go outside to take advantage of activities available at that time of year is not the best thing about winter, my neighbors believe watching hockey on television is the best thing about it.

Veronica Baig said...

Nadia: Much better:-)
Sara: With the infinitive, it isn't clear who is the subject of that first clause--it could be you!

Infinitive:
My neighbors, to go outside and take advantage of activities available at that time of year is not the best thing about winter, they believe watching hockey on television is the best thing about it.

Veronica Baig said...

Sara: There's a lack of connectivity here between some of the ideas.

Infinitive:
My neighbors, think to go outside and take advantage of activities available at that time of year is not the best thing about winter, they believe watching hockey on television is the best thing about winter.

GERUND
Thinking that the best thing about winter is that it is hockey season, my neighbours stay inside and watch the games on television; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

APPOSITIVE
My neighbours, who think that the best thing about winter is hockey season, never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of year, choosing instead to watch hockey on television.

INFINITIVE
To watch hockey on television is the best part of winter, according to my neighbours; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of year.

Veronica Baig said...

Sara: The sense is better; now check the punctuation.
Kelly: Yes, but I want you to note that in the appositive you have used a relative pronoun to combine the sentences, not an appositive.

Redoing Appositive:

My neighbours, avid hockey fans, think the best thing about winter is watching hockey on television; they never go outside and take advantage of outdoor activities that are available at that time of the year.

Kelly: Way to go:-)
