SENTENCE COMBINATION, June 21st, 2010

Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important skill in writing. There are many ways to do this--many possible bonus points! Try to combine the following three sentences.
Sentence 1: Canada Day falls in the middle of the week this year.
Sentence 2: The fireworks display is also really good, but it happens very late because of the long daylight hours.
Sentence 3: The July 1st holiday is a great way to start the new month.

The July 1st holiday(Canada Day), which falls in the middle of the week this year, is a great way to start the new month; the fireworks display is also really good, but it happens very late because of the long daylight hours.

July commences with Canada Day's celebratory fireworks which begin late into the evening because of the long daylight hours.

This year, Canada Day falls in the middle of the week, and due to the long day light hour, the fireworks are displayed late; however, this July first holiday is still a great way to start the month.

SHELLEY: You've done a good job on brevity:-)

Having Canada Day in the middle of the week this year is a great way to start the new month but I may miss the wonderful fireworks display because they will be set off later due to the long daylight hours.

VIRGINIA: Good, but do remember a comma before "but" when it introduces an independent clause.
