SENTENCE COMBINATION, Mar. 19th, 2010

Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important skill in writing. There are many ways to do this--many possible bonus points! Try to combine the following three sentences.

Sentence 1: The French were the first Europeans to settle in what is now Canada.
Sentence 2: Many of the British who came to Canada went to the New England colonies first.
Sentence 3: The American War of Independence prompted many Loyalists to leave the colonies and head for Canada as it was still under British control.

Although the French were the first Europeans to settle in what is now Canada, many English speaking colonists occupied the country, whose arrival can be traced back to the waves of the British colonization of New England, as well as the migration of the Loyalists after the American war while still under British control.

Julie: Something is misplaced in your sentence. A clause does not modify the word if follows; instead, if modifies something else.

Uzma: Your sentence is great up until the last clause. Can you rearrange the last part to make it fit better?

UZMA:You still haven't fixed the problem that Tamara identified;-)
SAADAT:You start out quite well, but then you seem to lose track of the idea in the middle--note the word form problem (independent) and your use of 'that'.
