Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important skill in writing. There are many ways to do this--many possible bonus points! Try to combine the following three sentences.
Sentence 1: Mrs. Niven prepared to teach a lesson on the significance of the Chinese New Year.
Sentence 2: All of the students turned up for class.
Sentence 3: Some were dressed in traditional Chinese clothes, and they all brought samples of Chinese food to share.

Prepared to teach a lesson on the significance of the Chinese New Year, Mrs. Niven was pleasantly surprised to see that all of her students turned up for class; they all brought samples of Chinese food to share, and some were dressed in traditional Chinese clothes.
Milijana: Nice sentence.
As Mrs. Niven prepared to teach a lesson on the significance of the Chinese New year, she was surprised to see that not only all of the students showed up for class but they also brought sample of Chinese food along with them to share; furthermore some also wore traditional Chinese clothing.
Umer: That's the idea. Now, remember to use a comma before "but" when it separates two independent clauses, and note that you should have either "a sample" or "samples".
Ok, Thanks for the pointers.
Here is it again:
As Mrs. Niven prepared to teach a lesson on the significance of the Chinese New year, she was surprised to see that not only all of the students showed up for class, but they also brought samples of Chinese food along with them to share; furthermore some also wore traditional Chinese clothing.
Umer: Yes, that's the way to do it!
As Mrs. Niven prepared to teach a lesson on the significance of the Chinese New year, she was happy to see that not only all of the students showed up for class, and that they brought a sample of Chinese food along with them to share; in addition, some also wore traditional Chinese clothing.
Sara: Good--just one small punctuation error;-)
